No Malaysian in Harvard for second consecutive year

April 12, 2012

For the second consecutive year, no Malaysian student has gained admission into Harvard University.

Datuk Dr Goh Cheng Teik, who heads the selection panel that interviews students for undergraduate admission into the university, said this was due to the deteriorating quality of applicants from Malaysia.

“I called the Harvard College Admissions Office and was told that although they received applications from Malaysian students, no one was shortlisted for interviews as they are not considered competitive enough,” he told The Star.

Dr Goh said former SMK Damansara Jaya student Avinaash Subramaniam was the last Malaysian to be accepted into Harvard in 2010.

Avinaash obtained 11A’s in the 2008 SPM and was awarded a full scholarship.

Harvard Club of Malaysia honorary secretary Nicholas Khaw, who is also an interviewer on the panel, said from 1985 to 2010, at least one applicant from Malaysia had been admitted into Harvard College every year. (Harvard College is the undergraduate school at Harvard University.)

In 2009, he said two students gained admission into Harvard.

According to a statement issued by the interview panel, a total of 30,489 and 34,950 applications were received by Harvard University in 2010 and 2011 with 6.9% and 6.3% gaining admission respectively.

It said among South-East Asian countries, Singapore has the highest number of students in Harvard College with 18, followed by Thailand (seven), Vietnam (six), Malaysia (five) and Indonesia (two).

Harvard Club of Malaysia executive committee member Wan Nadiah Wan Mohd encouraged Malaysian students to apply for admission into the university.

She said Harvard University this year awarded a total of US$172mil (RM531.48mil) in scholarships to 60% of its incoming students.

Wan Nadiah, who is also an interviewer, said students are encouraged to begin preparations for applications to Harvard at least six months before the application is due.

The application deadline for the 2013 intake is Jan 1 next year and further information can be found at http://www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/todays_harvard/index.html

Before & After the FIFA World Cup Finals.

July 9, 2010

Before the FIFA world cup finals in Afrika, Paul the Octopus was a show case. Mentor to many football punters for accurate prediction on who will be the winner of each match.

Paul the Octopus

BUT things change after Germany lost to Spain 0 – 1 in the semi-finals and so does the future of Paul and many of the same species as him……….read on to find out why?

see picture below….

BERLIN, July 9 — Some Germans are calling for a public roasting of the oracle octopus who correctly picked the winner of all six of their national soccer team’s World Cup matches — including a bitter defeat to Spain yesterday.

Paul, a two-year-old octopus in a German aquarium, turned into a global celebrity for his uncanny ability to predict the winner of all Germany’s matches — even a group stage defeat to Serbia and an ousting by Spain in the semi-finals.

“Nothing beats grilled octopus,” said Dolores Lusch, a Germany fan who works on a Berlin fish stall. “Cut him up in thin slices and grill him on all sides with a dash of lemon juice, olive oil and garlic on it. Delicious!”

Not an ordinarily superstitious people, Germans became believers in Paul’s possible psychic powers. The country was shocked and distraught when he picked Spain to win after tipping German wins over Argentina, England, Ghana and Australia.

German newspapers and websites were filled with suggestions of what to do with Paul — most involved cooking and eating him.

“Throw him in the frying pan,” wrote the Berliner Kurier newspaper in a popular sentiment echoed by Die Welt, Sueddeutsche Zeitung, the Hamburger Abendblatt and other newspapers.

Paul’s picks have become news across Germany and around the world. German networks have had live reports on Paul’s picks.

On Friday, Paul will tip the winner of Saturday’s Germany-Uruguay match for third place as well as the winner of the Spain-Netherlands final on Sunday. Networks in Germany, Spain and the Netherlands are planning live coverage.

The octopus, considered by some to be the most intelligent of all invertebrates, gets the choice of picking food from two different transparent containers lowered into his tank — one with a German flag on it and one with the opponent’s flag.

The container Paul opens first is regarded as his pick.

Media attention over Paul’s picks in Germany and abroad has grown exponentially and some commentators even wondered aloud whether his improbable winning streak might have begun to influence some of the more superstitious players.

Despite the antipathy towards Paul, Sea Life spokeswoman Tanja Munzig said Paul has a bright future at his home in Oberhausen.

“Nothing bad will happen to Paul,” she said. “No one wishes him ill-will. Paul has had a great run.”

Munzig added that Paul’s career might go on.

“We’ve had some enquiries about his future,” she said. — Reuters

Grilled Octopus, New found delicacy in Germany.

Poor Paul ended up as a new delicacy for the Germans, i wonder if this will be the favourite dish for the Dutch or the Spanish team too? Let us wait till next week ( after the final match ) to find out. Funny? I don’t think so.

Welcome to Sarawak. Another By-Election.

April 9, 2010

Hulu Selangor will be a testing ground for PR to defend on the 25th April 2010. Most probably between PKR and MIC.

Today it is given a chance back to BN to defend in Sibu, Sarawak, when their MP Datuk Robert Lau passed away this morning. PR lost it’s first By-Election in Batang Ai, Sarawak after 308.

Now the battle will be getting tougher and tougher since both side are fighting a nail biting battle in every By-Election since 308.

And the score now stands in favour of PR with a 7 PR vs 2 BN. Let us hear for our East Malaysian Brothers and sisters after the showdown in Hulu Selangor.

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Rakyat (PR) registered the highest number of voters in 2009, according to Election Commission (EC) statistics.

The opposition coalition of PKR, DAP and PAS took the lion’s share by registering 54.5% of the 69,906 new voters with the EC, while Barisan Nasional (BN) recorded 45.1% for the whole of Malaysia.

But Umno topped the list for the most number of voters registered among 20 political parties at 24,818 or 35.5% followed by DAP at 25.4% and PAS at 24.3%.

For the whole of last year 59,568 eligible voters registered with the political parties in Peninsular Malaysia while 10,338 registered themselves with the parties in East Malaysia.

Among the BN partners, Umno was the most hardworking at 78.6% followed by Sarawak-based Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) at 6.6% (2,082 voters).

MCA finished third with 1,467 voters registered or 4.6%. The 15-party coalition registered 31,568 new voters.

In the PR coalition, DAP was top with 17,790 voters (46.6%) registered, followed closely by PAS’ 17,022 (44.6%). PKR came in last with a paltry 3,331 (8.7%) new voters logged. Together, the parties registered 38,143 new voters.

According to the February 2010 data, last year’s trend was repeated with PR recording 55.3% of the total number of new voters registered followed by BN at 44.5%. Umno also led the way with 41.9% followed by DAP (25.3%) and PAS (19.2%).

In Perak, despite its loss of the state government last year, PR registered the highest number of new voters at 7,357 or 81.5% while BN pulled in 1,664 (18.5%) new voters.

In contrast, BN pulled in more new voters in Terengganu and Johor. In Terengganu, BN registered 85.4% of the 9,281 new voters while PAS logged in the remainder.

In Umno’s backyard of Johor, BN registered 73.5% of the 6,417 new voters while PR took 26.5%.

In the PAS hotbed, Kelantan, 92.4% of the 4,938 new voters chose to register with the Islamist party while the rest opted for Umno.

But in Selangor, the numbers were more evenly split with PR taking 57.8% of the 12,546 new voters compared to BN’s 42.3%.

The numbers were also similar in the other PR-held states of Penang and Kedah. PR had 57.2% and 57.9% in Penang and Kedah respectively.

In anticipation of a state election in Sarawak, PR parties — PKR and DAP — have stepped up their activities by registering 52.5% of the 7,669 new voters compared to the BN ones.

DAP registered 2,717 while PKR logged in 1,306. Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s party, PBB, registered 2,082 new voters while another coalition partner Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) logged in 1,254.

They gave an MCA and a Gerakan rep the 48 hours from since last Friday to apologise to them in a very aggressive manner and i thought we will be seeing a very fierce showdown this week but sad to say, those warriors chicken out and finally decided to buy this book and handed it to them for reading, since they understand that the MCA & Gerakan guys does not understand the “Perlembagaan Negara”……ha ha ha.

ALL ENGLAND Lee Chong Wei was crowned All England Open 2010 men’s singles champion for the first time after beating Kenichi Tago of Japan at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham on Sunday.

Ha ha ha…it gives me the right to call those pemuda2 umno “cowards” as they are only good at shouting in the streets and making a fool of themselves.

They are sore losers and certainly “tak ada maruah sekali” to face the Pakatan Rakyat’s Youth in this debate.
